Drapes - if drapes needed cleaning, have it done. If they are ole and worn, stained or dark, consider replacing them with either light-colored drapes or off-white vinyl vertical blinds. You may want to check discount and home improvement centers usually carry standard sizes at reasonable prices or discount.
Carpet - dirty carpets should be either professionally steam-cleaned (preferred), or you should rent a heavy-duty cleaner. If the carpet is badly worn, replace it with new carpet (and a quality pad) in a neutral color.
